With the holidays coming up, it can be easy to get into the most undesirable of situations. From losing your cell phone to the very extreme of being robbed or kidnapped, these apps will help keep you safe and your cell phone safe. It’s definitely not something we as gals like to think about, let alone prepare for, but it’s always better to be prepared for anything. We began scouring the Android App store for apps that could come in handy to any geek (and even non-geek) chics in just about every situation.
We went even further to make sure they fit a very tight budget. Each and every app we’re about to share with you is F-R-E-E, but ones you’ll want to get installed and learn how to use before the holiday season.
1.Panic Button Widget
We saw lots of apps on the market place that offered the same features the Panic button does, but several implementations really stood out to us.First, the ability to customize your own personal emergency message and a hidden pass code that would let others know you were seriously in trouble. In short, if the axe murderer managed to get your phone and try to cancel the alert, they wouldn’t know the pass code. The app would then alert the receiving parties that you were REALLY in trouble. One other feature we loved was that it will send out not only an SMS to your chosen recipients, it also forwards your locale via GPS AND will record several seconds of what’s going on around you.Meaning you could easily yell out locations, a description of where you are, what your attacker looks like, if you’re hurt, just about anything. You can program the app to dial 911, your mom, your dad, your boyfriend/husband, all at the push of one button on your home screen. You can make the button large, medium or small, either way it’s a great addition to your home page widgets during the holidays.
2.Flashlight Professional
We went looking for this one for the simplest of reasons but found the app had so many other uses. Not only can you turn on the flashlight feature to do everything from searching through your purse for your keys, but could very well use it to help change a tire. That is if you have someone else to hold the phone. It also flashes police lights and a siren, a repeating SOS siren (helpful in the event of a zombie attack) and will even allow you to add your own custom message that will flash and work with the SOS siren or the police siren. It also has a flashing red light alerting people to stop if you needed them to. The first app we found didn’t allow you to take calls while using the app, but this one allows for calls. It does lower the volume on the sirens but you can easily flip your screen back to the flashing lights and still stay on your call.
3.Look Out Mobile
This app has won tons of awards and rightly so. It does all the important things, even in just the free version. It can be easy to misplace a phone while Christmas shopping as any woman will tell you.You sit your phone down to try on that cute little scarf or gloves, next thing you know, it’s gone and you have no idea where you left it.Well Look Out Mobile will allow you to use any browser to not only locate your phone, but also make it scream. Yes that’s right, we said scream, emitting a screeching tone, causing ear drums to bust, making some one drop it and run, lol. These two features are absolutely free. For a fee you can update and have Look Out lock and wipe your phone clean after it’s lost, but in newer phones, such as the LG Optimus, you can have your phone locked all the time, so this wouldn’t be an issue. You can also back up your data for free, including contacts and photos. The app also offers virus protection, fantastic! While there are several apps to help you locate a lost phone, most make you jump through a lot of hoops to find it and none of the scream capabilities worked either.Considering this is free, it is truly invaluable.
