The story starts out when Captain Morgan tosses your grandfather in jail on suspicion of being the infamous Pirate Kidd when secretly the only thing the shady Captain wants is the treasure your grandfather found; a basic story that offers a lot of potential for twists and turns along the way, which this game certainly has, though the twists don’t always make sense. While you’re moving through the game the scene changes from England to Spain to the Caribbean and eventually making your way back to England. It’s not altogether clear why the story has you going to all of these places, but at least they offer a bit of a different background for the meat of the game.
If you like ‘find the hidden object’ type games you’ll certainly adore this one.I know I did.The artwork was beautiful, the music was soothing, and most of the time the items are so cleverly hidden it does take a bit to find them. The objects you’re looking for are represented as icons at the bottom of your screen. Each one has a colored background. The yellow and blue items are ones that are important to the story, and may be a little more difficult to find, or even require another item to get to (ie: opening a locked safe). You get bonuses for making correct clicks in a row, so don’t go randomly clicking stuff like I did. You’ll know if you have… your hand will freeze over.I have to admit, I did that a few times just because I thought it was fun.I’m so easily amused sometimes.
There are mini games and puzzles scattered through the game. The puzzle ones seem to make sense with the overall theme of the game. They range from move-the-tile puzzle games to putting together the torn pieces of a prescription to see who it was for. Some are entirely too simple while others take a bit to get. They can also be rather repetitive which takes away some of the challenge of the puzzles themselves.
The one mini game I actually didn’t care for was the one where you ha d to shoot bandits without hitting the innocent victims. To me it felt out of place in a game where your mind seems to be the main tool and not your hand to eye coordination. It did have a purpose, however. If you get 150 clovers, either through finding them in the hidden object scenes or by shooting bandits, you get to unlock a secret mission at the end of the game.If you’ve got quick fingers you’ll hit that mark easily by doing the shoot the bandit mini game.
The voice acting was atrocious.I actually turned the sound down during the talking scenes and just read the script instead. It made me cringe.I’m thankful they had it subtitled so I could do that. The only other thing I can think of that might be considered bad is how short the game was.I actually finished it the day Gameinatrix gave it to me and just played through it a couple more times to get a good feel for it.It would be nice to have more puzzles available.
All in all I would definitely recommend this game.Even with the few flaws it has, it’s so worth it.I’ll keep it installed on my computer, just to stamp the Snow White Seal of Approval on it... and maybe to play it again.
