Genre-defining flick-shooter, Orbital Defence, submitted to App Store and IGF Mobile competition

Australian start-up looking to change how you play shmups on your iPhone

Sydney, Australia – November 16, 2009 – membraine studios announces that it has submitted its new game, Orbital Defence for iPhone and iPod Touch, to Apple for publishing on the App Store, as well as for consideration in the Independent Games Festival (IGF) Mobile competition.

Orbital Defence is the world's first flick-shmup—an arcade-style, flick-based shoot-'em-up—for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The game is reminiscent of the great shoot-'em-ups of the past, such as Galaga, Missile Command and Space Invaders, but takes this time-honoured gameplay in a new direction.

What makes Orbital Defence unique is its flick-based control system, which makes the most of the iPhone's touch-oriented control surface—the result of which is a highly playable and great fun shoot 'em up that you can play in a cafe, on the train, on the bus, in the pub...anywhere you take your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Talking about the game's beta program, which concluded immediately prior to the game's submission to Apple, game designer Glenn McLeod said, "We opened our beta testing up to select members of the gaming community so we could gather feedback directly from our target audience as to how the game was shaping up. No one could tell us how close or how far off the sweet spot we were like the gamers out there in the wild could, and we made the most of the feedback we received.

"The best thing was hearing how much fun everyone had with the game. 'Cause, really, that's what it's all about."

membraine studios targeted a mid- to late-November release window in order to ensure Orbital Defence's entry into the 2010 IGF Mobile competition, and hopes the game will pass speedily through Apple's rigorous acceptance testing process in order to be available to iPhone and iPod Touch gamers before Christmas.

Footage of the gameplay can be seen on the membraine studios website or YouTube channel:
